To attempt solving the mystery of the Nostradamus Centuries is like playing the video game "Myst", but much more complicated and with some permanent references to the history of civilizations. Enigmas follow one another, terms and indications require some guess work, and many quatrains, which seemed independent of each other at first reading, turn out to be related. When a first level of understanding is reached, some new questions arise. In the end, some details of imminent terrifying catastrophes that will destroy the world become quite clear. Hopefully, they go along with some victories over adversity.

It is easy while reading the Centuries to recognize some events and dates that now belong to history but that were still to come when the seer wrote the quatrains. It is the case with the French revolution. The described "second antichrist" definitely corresponds to Robespierre, a French blood thirsty obsessed revolutionary who beheaded 2/3 of the clergy, the king and his family as well as most of the country's elite. Yet, this guy is still a national hero in France, which raises questions about the reign of the antichrist! Nostradamus also predicted that the name of the beheaded king would be "Bourbon", although his dynasty was still unknown at the time of the writing. He also described his flee through the city of Varennes and his arrest followed by his execution, all with an astounding precision. Even those who do not know much about the details of this part of history end up stupefied by the reading. The non-believers urge to find another explanation.

The Centuries were published in 1555 and Nostradamus very accurately predicted the French revolution to take place in 1792, some 237 years later. The generally accepted history date is 1789, but it is wrong. For it is only in 1792 that the king Louis XVI was thrown out of power and beheaded, that the church persecutions began and that a new revolutionary calendar was decided. These facts, many more and dates are all given in the masterpiece of the Centuries.

Nostradamus mentioned only six prophetic dates that cover a period of 444 years. This invalidates common statements that attempt to explain that "because he announced so many dates, some had to end up being right". Four out of the six dates have been verified so far, so simple random turns out to be very unlikely. It would be equivalent to draw out of a hat that contains 3000 tags, all three names predicted to crash in a plane. "Random" should also accurately predict their city of destination as well as the date of the accident. Of course random is not a complete impossibility, but the statistical theory is quite difficult to defend at this point, and it is not complete nonsense to assume that the Centuries enclose a prophetic value. However, no one so far has ever been able to understand the deep hidden meaning ahead of the predicted events.

Nostradamus prophetic visions prove to be more accurate than the perception of most historians, yet some contend that he was mistaken concerning an event that should have taken place in "September 1999". He announced that a "monstrous evil being will strike from the sky to wake up an ancient spirit of terror". Should the quatrain have mentioned 2001 instead, its significance would be perfectly clear. However, it is not, and it is possible that some of the dates he stated are only approximate.

However, we should wait a little longer to confirm this, for history sometimes requires some time to give its full perspective. It is possible that our great grand children will learn the date of September 1999 instead of 2001 in a few centuries from now, just like everyone today obstinately repeats 1789 instead of 1792.
